Word on the Decline

  • After yesterday’s announcement from Emerald on the US$200-400m facility for “future acquisitions”, let’s try and deduce what Emerald might actually be hunting.

  • It owns 19.9% of Golden Horse and has maintained that stake through raises, but we see no reason it wants 100% at this stage. Unless GHM comes into play, EMR looks happy letting someone else fund the exploration.

  • Then there’s Manda, the pre-IPO vehicle Emerald is backing which has acquired Pacgold’s Queensland assets, alongside other North Queensland projects, effectively giving it a ready-made consolidation vehicle there. It also has plaint applications over Avenira’s Yandal ground. Interesting, but nothing warranting an acquisition.

  • We have previously written about Unity Metals in Cambodia. It’s too small and too early stage yet as well.

  • Which leaves what else? Mt Todd? Don’t rule it out…

  • Still, we wouldn’t over-read the facility. Every GoldCo has one now, and they’re surprisingly rarely used for any acquisition.
