Word on the Decline

  • Our read from Evolution’s investor day deck is that Red Lake is a genuine divestment candidate.

  • Strip it out and the portfolio arguably improves overnight. Red Lake carries Evolution’s highest-cost gold ounces, remains capital hungry, and sits at the bottom end of the portfolio on returns.

  • That makes Lawrie Conway’s comments only a month ago interesting. Asked whether Red Lake was still core, he described it as a “perfect fit” alongside Mungari, generating cash while the higher-return Australian assets (Cowal, Ernest Henry and Northparkes) absorb growth capital.

  • Perhaps. But Evolution has also repeatedly said a gold bull market should make it more likely to sell than buy. We believe them.

  • The harder question is price.

Devil’s in the Detail

  • Vulcan has a habit of bucking the trend versus its lithium developer peers. In 2024, a horror year for most developers, it was up 90%.

  • Now it’s down ~64% from its 52-week high, while peers are up.

  • Maybe it is just “succession”. But we always pay close attention to Executive Director departures.
