Word on the Decline

  • One bit of market chatter we wouldn’t dismiss is SSR Mining taking a swing at Liberty Gold. SSR has US$1.8B of cash, no long-term debt and, after selling Çöpler and Hod Maden, a very deliberate Americas focus.

  • Liberty’s Black Pine looks almost suspiciously on-strategy: a US$411m, run-of-mine oxide heap-leach in Idaho, targeting 202kozpa in its first five years.

  • That is familiar territory for the owner of Marigold and CC&V. Liberty’s fresh feasibility study also removes a handy chunk of technical uncertainty. Centerra’s 9.9% stake complicates matters, but with Beaver Creek approaching, an SSR-Liberty announcement would hardly shock us.

Devil’s in the Detail

  • For now, Tserenpuntsag is simply the 52.5% shareholder of Aspire kindly standing behind Ovoot’s debt. If the guarantee gets called, however, the kindness comes with a reimbursement claim against the project company. Entirely conventional finance, of course.

  • So was most of Canyon, right up until it wasn’t.
