Word on the Decline

  • We have heard a number of times that Alcoa got pretty close to buying South32’s Worsley Alumina business last year before discussions cooled. We don’t know where those are at today.

  • South32 owns 86% of Worsley, which threw off more than US$1B of EBITDA in FY25. EBITDA is nice but its cash that is required to fund Hermosa without testing shareholders’ patience. Combine that with the broader ambitions of the business to become a copper company…

  • For Alcoa, Worsley only makes sense if it can lift returns across the surviving WA system. And there are lots of moving parts in that equation: gas contract roll-off, tougher bauxite approvals, carbon pressure and the awkward business of mining the right ore to keep refinery chemistry happy.

Devil’s in the Detail

  • The votes are in from Almonty’s AGM, and the results aren’t pretty

  • Canadian businesses don’t allow for a direct vote on the rem report, as we do here in Australia, so shareholders air their dissatisfaction by voting directly against directors - add to that other factors that have rubbed them the wrong way over the past year

  • The results speak for themselves!
