Word on the Decline
Glencore's ASX debut yesterday reminded us of another recent secondary listing. Remember Sigma Lithium?
A month on the ASX and not a single CDI has changed hands. Just 600,000 sit on issue, representing roughly 0.5% of the company. We suspect that won't remain the case for long.
Sigma's US$100m Synergy loan, secured against its Brazilian operating company, matures on 13 December, with a cash-sweep payment due 17 November. It had just US$17m in cash at June, has already banked prepayments against 2026 sales, and its ~US$100m Phase 2 expansion hinges on a BNDES loan still under review.
Which begs the question: why bother listing on the ASX if nobody trades your stock?
Perhaps because the liquidity you're after isn't secondary. Marimaca ran a similar playbook. Token ASX listing, followed five months later by an A$80m CDI placement.
Why wait? Without a full prospectus, a company needs three months of ASX quotation before it can place new CDIs that investors can sell straight away. For Sigma, that window opens in early December.
