Word on the Decline

  • We suspect 29Metals is getting close to pulling the trigger on a precious metals stream, and hear it could eclipse KGL Resources' recent deal in size.

  • Management has made little secret of its appetite for alternative financing, with streaming repeatedly floated as a way to fund Capricorn Copper's restart without passing the hat around shareholders.

  • Our understanding is that a prospective deal could capture precious metal byproducts across both Golden Grove and Capricorn Copper.

Devil’s in the Detail

  • BHP and Rio have spent decades building and fiercely protecting their Pilbara rail networks, arguably their greatest strategic barriers to entry.

  • Selling them would mean handing that advantage to an infrastructure investor whose commercial interests won't necessarily align with theirs.

  • And there's a certain irony in BlackRock suggesting the idea, having already found itself on the other side of BHP's US$2bn Pilbara power infrastructure deal through its subsidiary GIP…

  • We think it would be short-sighted to say the least.
