Word on the Decline
Suresh Vadnagra has the look of an Elliott-compatible appointment, at minimum. Elliott’s mining push has been closely tied to Sandeep Biswas via the proposed Hyperion vehicle, while Vadnagra was a senior Newcrest executive under Biswas.
That does not prove Elliott picked him, but it gives the appointment a very neat activist smell. Elliott wanted an external operator to fix Northern Star’s execution discount, and NST has hired a Newcrest-era projects man with no historic attachment to the empire.
The kicker is the contract: a $1.6m cash sign-on, payable on change of control before he even starts. Quite the welcome mat for a sale process.
