Word on the Decline
South32 will soon have an interesting problem, what to do with the firepower created by its aluminium exit. The Alcoa deal delivers US$3.1bn cash upfront, alongside roughly US$1bn of Alcoa stock, and market chatter suggests pure-play copper is being heavily evaluated.
We initially thought the obvious problem was relative valuation. How could South32 convey the merit of a pureplay copper businesses trading on much fatter multiples? Except the gap has quietly disappeared.
South32 is around 6.5x NTM EBITDA versus Sandfire at 6.9x, (yes Hermosa is still consuming capital ahead of earnings a few years out).
It makes copper M&A easier to sell than we first thought. But join the party, everyone wants copper.
