Word on the Decline

  • South32 will soon have an interesting problem, what to do with the firepower created by its aluminium exit. The Alcoa deal delivers US$3.1bn cash upfront, alongside roughly US$1bn of Alcoa stock, and market chatter suggests pure-play copper is being heavily evaluated.

  • We initially thought the obvious problem was relative valuation. How could South32 convey the merit of a pureplay copper businesses trading on much fatter multiples? Except the gap has quietly disappeared.

  • South32 is around 6.5x NTM EBITDA versus Sandfire at 6.9x, (yes Hermosa is still consuming capital ahead of earnings a few years out).

  • It makes copper M&A easier to sell than we first thought. But join the party, everyone wants copper.
