Word on the Decline

  • We hear that Thailand's Banpu is hunting for a buyer for Centennial Coal, its portfolio of NSW underground thermal coal mines.

  • It's a tough collection of assets. Five operating mines across Lake Macquarie and Lithgow, with ageing infrastructure, challenging geology and a heavy reliance on domestic power stations with their own expiry dates.

  • Centennial has recorded three consecutive years of operating losses. Banpu paid A$2.5bn for Centennial in 2010. Finding someone willing to pay a fraction of that today will be a challenge.

  • Even Banpu's own independent adviser declined to use a DCF to value Centennial in its January report, citing uncertainty around future performance.

  • When even the spreadsheet refuses to cooperate, you know it's a tough sell.
