Word on the Decline

  • On the back of this column’s rumour last week that Eldorado could be circling Liberty Gold, we’ve since heard the competition may also feature deal-hungry Equinox Gold, fresh from completing its merger with Orla Mining.

  • That would jar with public messaging, with incoming CEO Jason Simpson saying in August the business needed to focus on the “next six months” of execution and delivery, implying a quieter M&A window through roughly February 2027.

  • Still, Black Pine is exactly the sort of asset Equinox could justify making an exception for: a large US heap-leach project that fits neatly alongside South Railroad and deepens its North American growth pipeline. And there is precedent.

  • In February, Darren Hall said “M&A is not on our radar” just days after Equinox had already begun discussions with Orla as it would be revealed in the transaction docs. Liberty would be a more audacious move now, but we would not rule it out entirely.
