Word on the Decline
Interesting to see Solvay’s La Rochelle rare earths plant front and centre again.
Reuters reports OneIM is circling the 78-year-old French facility, one of the few outside China capable of separating all 17 rare earth elements.
It has attracted plenty of strategic interest before. In the pre-price-floor era, upstream miners had an obvious incentive to chase downstream exposure, partly to protect their upstream margins. Lynas, who now enjoys a US$110/kg NdPr floor in Japan and revealed last week it was itself in takeover discussions earlier this year, was amongst them.
